Sindh mulls legal options after ECP rejects LG polls delay notification

KARACHI: The Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon said on Friday that the provincial government will see the legal options after the rejection of LG polls delay notification by ECP, ARY News reported.

As per details, the Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon said that the ECP’s decision to hold LG polls on January 15 has loopholes.

The PPP minister said that it’s not in ECP’s jurisdiction to issue or return notification, the Sindh government hold this authority.

He maintained that the Sindh government has used their authority to postpone the LG polls as the MQM-P has reservations about the delimitations.

On Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) today’s protest, Sharjeel Memon said that they have the right to protest without disturbing the law-and-order situation of the city.

Furthermore, he said the Sindh government will respond when the written verdict is issued by ECP.

Earlier today, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) rejected the Sindh government’s notification to postpone the second phase of LG polls in Sindh and ruled that the local bodies elections in Karachi and Hyderabad will be held as per schedule on January 15.

Deployment of police halted

In another development, the provincial government halted the deployment of police in Karachi and Hyderabad ahead of the LG elections.

Almost 63,000 police personnel were required for security during LG polls in the two divisions. The personnel were summoned from Mirpurkhas, Sukkur, Larkana and Shaheed Benazirabad.

The decision, in this regard, would be taken after the provincial cabinet meeting.

MQM-P threatens to resist LG polls

Earlier in the day, the reunited Muttahida Quami Movement – Pakistan (MQM-P) threatened that it would not let local government (LG) elections take place in Karachi and Hyderabad on January 15.

The announcement was made after Pak Sarzameen Party (PSP) Chairman Syed Mustafa Kamal and MQM Bahali Committee founder Dr Farooq Sattar announced to merge with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P).
