KARACHI: The Sindh cabinet on Monday decided to rename a university in Hyderabad which was earlier named after the founder of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), ARY News reported.

Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah University, a new name to the university has been suggested.

Previously, a bill stipulating formation of two universities, one in Karachi and another in Hyderabad, each bearing the name of the founder MQM was passed in Sindh Assembly in December 2014.

The bill was followed by another one relating formation of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University at Shaheed Benazirabad tabled for debate then in the provincial legislature.

Following the legislation, the foundation stone of the university was laid by founder and chairman of Bahria Town Malik Riaz and former governor of Sindh Ishratul Ebad on January 30, 2015 jointly.

However, various political parties have demanded change in name of the university time to time after the political fortunes of the MQM founder in doldrums.
