Twenty-eight-year-old Sarwan Singh said he was travelling in his car when he saw a group of men pointing towards the canal.
“I stopped my car and went over to check what was happening. I was shocked to see that there was a dog drowning but no was actually helping.”
The man quickly took off his turban to use it to free the stricken dog from an irrigation canal in Punjab, India.
Sarwan, who cannot swim, decided to make use of his turban in a last ditch attempt to help the dog.

Video shows the sikh man bravely climbing down the steep banks of the canal and using his turban – one of the holiest items in the sikh religion.
Sarwan described the instance that people were shocked to see him taking off his turban, thinking that “I am disrespecting my faith.”
‘But what was important at that point was to save the animal’s life,’ he said.
Wearing a turban is one of the five articles of faith in Sikhism. It is a doctrine of Sikhism that one can only remove their turbans at home or while bathing.
With the help of some bystanders, Sarwan managed to climb down the banks of the canal by holding one of his turban, which he used as a rope. He used the remaining part of his turban to hold onto the dog.
Later after saving the animal, Sarwan said he fed the dog some biscuits and let him go.
