DAVOS: Pakistan’s Oscar-winning documentary maker Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy and Bollywood director Karan Johar held a one-on-one conversation in the ongoing 2017 World Economic Forum (WEF) in which many subjects were talked upon.
While discussing Chinoy’s win at the Oscars, Johar said that he was proud as a filmmaker and the impact of his/her work is everything that an artist aspires for.
Sharmeen, speaking on K-Jo’s career in the film industry commented that his films made her realise what love was and it was powerful thing for women in this part of the world.
Chinoy said, “I felt you (Johar) told stories that allowed us to dream, whether it was about love, or about religion or about sexual orientation — all of the things we felt and wanted you were telling us on the big screen.”
She went on to say that Bollywood was Pakistan’s film industry and the country had no film industry of its own when she was growing up.
The Pakistani film and documentary director stated that she would get upset when she was criticized for her works and wondered why because she wasn’t the one doing the atrocity, she was the one who was showcasing it so that it would stop.
“I was doing something that I believed in, that was close to my heart,” she added.
She went on to say that she rather have people who love or hate her and would not be indifferent. And so in Pakistan, people either love me or they hate me.
Karan Johar, while speaking on criticism he receives said that it was anger that moved to indifference and now it has become amusing for him. He added, “Like now if I’m not criticized in the morning or trolled or abused to death I feel like it’s something missing in the day.”
Chinoy stated that artists have to be true to their hearts and do things that they want. She also said that she hoped that one day she will watch Fawad Khan in a film directed by the Indian director.
