Iran invites Pakistan to second round of talks on Afghanistan

ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi Monday held a telephonic conversation with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir Abdollahian as the latter invited him to the second round of a ministerial meeting of neighouring countries of Afghanistan, ARY NEWS reported.

The two foreign ministers discussed the regional situation and other matters of mutual interest besides also discussing the ongoing developments in Afghanistan.

The second round of a ministerial meeting of the neighbouring countries of Afghanistan is due next week.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi lauded a consensus between Pakistan and Iran on the Afghanistan issue and said that regional cooperation on ensuring peace in Afghanistan is the only way forward.

He also stressed the coordinated efforts to deal with the economic crisis in Afghanistan.

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi met his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amirabdollahian in Tehran in August this year and discussed with him the evolving situation in Afghanistan.

Pleased to meet FM Amirabdollahian in Tehran and shared congratulations on the assumption of office,” the foreign minister wrote on his official Twitter handle.

He said he had “extensive discussions on regional security and a coordinated approach for Afghanistan to work towards security, stability and an inclusive political settlement in Afghanistan”.


His Tehran visit was part of a four-nation trip to apprise Pakistan’s neighbouring countries on its perspective about the situation evolving in Afghanistan after the Taliban takeover of the war-torn country.
