ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Monday directed the federal government to ensure posting of judicial officers to vacant accountability courts across the country.
A bench of the apex court gave this direction while hearing a case pertaining to the appointment of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) prosecutor general.
The court sought a report from the federal law secretary on postings of accountability judges within two weeks.
At the outset of the hearing, the attorney general sought one week’s time for filling the vacant post of the NAB prosecutor general.
He informed the judges that a new prosecutor general will be appointed within a week.
To a query, he said the government has not yet proposed to the Islamabad High Court (IHC) chief justice the names of judges for their posting to Islamabad accountability courts. The accountability judges would be appointed within ten days, he added.
Who was responsible for the delay in the appointment of the NAB prosecutor, Justice Gulzar Ahmed asked, lamenting that it was unfortunate that the country lacked any policy.
The bureau’s prosecution department was suffering owing to absence of the prosecutor general, he observed and remarked the authorities were dragging their feet to fill the post to benefit someone.
Why the law department was not fulfilling its responsibilities, the judge asked.
Justice Gulzar said their should have been a practice of nominating a judge two months before the outgoing judge relinquished charge.
