KARACHI: An accountability court on Saturday issued arrest warrants for former prime minister and Pakistan People’s Party leader Raja Parvez Ashraf, ARY News reported.

The court dismissed an application seeking exemption for the former premier to appear personally for further proceedings, and ordered to present him and others involved on April 18.

The court was hearing reference filed by the National Accountability Bureau in the GEPCO corruption case. Ashraf has been alleged of involved in corrupt practices and 437 illegal appointments in the power company.

The counsel for Ashraf informed the court that he was presently abroad and could not appear before the court. He also sought exemption from further hearings.

However, the presiding judge said the court has directed to provide fool-proof security to Ashraf. The court ordered to present Ashraf and other accomplices by April 18 and adjourned the case hearing.

Ashraf’s counsel, Iftikhar Awan, said that they will challenge the court order in the high court.
