LAHORE: Punjab government on Monday restored local government institutions in the province after the Supreme Court directed the provincial government to restore local bodies, ARY News reported.

A notification was also issued by the Local Government and Community Development (LGCD) Department.

The notification was issued after Chief Minister Sardar Usman Ahmed Buzdar today accorded approval to restore local bodies in the province.

The meeting decided to remove administrators of the local councils in the province.

Chief Minister Buzdar directed provincial local government department to issue notification for restoration of the local councils in Punjab.

“The government has decided to make the local government councils functional in the province,” Chief Minister Buzdar said. “Every step will be taken in the light of the constitution and the law,” the chief minister said.

The session was attended by Local Government Minister Mehmood ur Rasheed, Advocate General Punjab, secretary local government and other concerned officials.

In its March 25 verdict, the Supreme Court had directed the provincial government to restore the local government institutions.

In a recent hearing for implementation of the verdict, the apex court on Friday expressed dismay over non-compliance of its March 25 ruling for restoration of local councils in Punjab and summoned the incumbent as well as the former chief secretary of the province.
