President of India meets Geeta – calls her daughter of “both nations”

Geeta reached her native country India, after more than a decade and was accorded a warm welcome back home. The 23 year-old hearing and speech impaired teen was received at the airport by Indian delegates and a family who claimed her as their own daughter. However, Geeta refused to identify them as her family, after which they had to leave. Seems now that a DNA test would only reveal who Geeta’s real parents are.

However, she did get the chance to meet President of India Pranab Mukherjee around 1 pm. During the meeting, the members of the Edhi Foundation were also present there. The President was delighted to meet the girl and let his feelings know via  a tweet:-

Geeta had strayed into Pakistan from India at the age of 11 years-old. She had spent the rest of her years till now in Karachi, Pakistan at the Edhi Foundation. She was reportedly under the care of Bilquis Edhi. It was not until Salman Khan’s movie Bajrangi Bhaijaan

released that Geeta’s issue was highlighted. The smash-hit blockbuster flick portrayed how an Indian person helped a deaf, mute girl cross the border back to her country Pakistan. It was after the movie that the Edhi Foundation and social activist Ansar Burney highlighted the case of Geeta. Soon, even Salman Khan jumped into the fray and managed to highlight her cause. He even spoke to Geeta and Bilquis Edhi in an Indian talk show.
