ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) candidate Aitzaz Ahsan on Monday filed his nomination papers for the Presidential elections in Islamabad.
As the opposition led by Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N), remained divided over PPP’s decision to nominate Ahsan for president, they have now decided to nominate Maulana Fazl ul Rehman, which will decisively divide the strength of combined opposition.
Maulana Fazl ur Rehman will shortly submit his nomination papers in the Islamabad High Court.
A meeting of the opposition parties was held in Murree on Saturday in efforts to agree on a presidential candidate against Pakistan Tehreek e Insaaf’s Arif Alvi.
However, PPP rejected Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s objections over Ahsan and decided to stick to its choice of candidate for the post.
How the elections are conducted
The president of the State is elected through an electoral college which includes members of Senate, National Assembly, and the four provincial assemblies.
The voting is conducted through a secret ballot process.
The competition is strong between two candidates. Ruling Party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s Dr. Arif Alvi and opposition Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) nominated Aitzaz Ahsan.
