KARACHI: Opposition leader in the Senate Sherry Rehman on Monday demanded of the authorities concerned to provide adequate security to Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and the people participating in election rallies.

In a statement issued by Bilawal House in Karachi on Monday, she said the holding of transparent election is responsibility of the caretaker government and the Election Commission of Commission (ECP).

The demand comes in the wake of Sunday’s incident when a group of protesters pelted Bilawal’s motorcade with stones in Lyari.

Police booked as many as 400 unidentified and 13 identified people for allegedly disrupting the PPP chairman’s election rally in the party stronghold Lyari.

Kalri police station registered first information report (FIR) of the violent incident which involved a group of people who threw stones at the PPP chairman’s convoy when it was passing through the Agra Taj Colony area on Sunday evening.

The case has been registered under relevant provisions stipulating punishment for causing disruption in peace and hurling stones at a rally. Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act has also been incorporated in the FIR.

The PPP chairman visited Lyari to kick off the party’s campaign in the impoverished neighborhood, which historically remained the party’s stronghold.
