WATCH: Pakistani powerlifter Maryam Nasim grabs bronze medal at int’l event

MELBOURNE: Pakistani-Australian powerlifter Maryam Nasim has won a bronze medal at the Avia Powerlifting competition.

The event was organized in Melbourne and athletes from all over the world took part in it.

Maryam Naseem, who hails from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, holds the honour of becoming the first female weightlifter from Pakistan to have won the silver medal. She accomplished the feat last year.

Maryam had participated in the 63 kilograms category of the event alongside participants from seven other countries.

Maryam Nasim suffered an acute injury and she was not able to deadlift even half of the weight she deadlifted in the competition, but her coach asked to keep going and she eventually stood victorious.

“I couldn’t squat or deadlift properly. I was pulling out of the camp but my coach wanted me to learn from this experience. Show the right attitude, still go but not lift heavy,” said Maryam Nasim.

The powerlifter dedicated her win to Pakistan’s hockey hero, Mansoor Ahmed.
