PM Sharif, Gen Sharif arrive in Quetta for key security meeting

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, General Raheel Sharif and Director General of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Lieutenant General Rizwan Akhtar are in Quetta for the meeting of the provincial apex committee. The apex committees were formed in all provinces to monitor the steps taken by the provincial governments to implement the National Action Plan against terrorism.

The government had devised a National Action Plan against terrorism after the attack on Peshawar’s Army Public School on 16th December 2014 which left 150 people dead mostly children.

The 21st Amendment in the constitution paved the way for the formation of military courts in the country to hear the cases of terrorism. Moreover, the prime minister also lifted moratorium on death penalty as a step to curb terrorism.

Pakistan’s sparsely populated and resources rich southwestern province of Balochistan suffering the brunt of Taliban militancy, sectarianism and a separatist insurgency for the local people’s right over the natural resources of the province.
