PIA Chairman Azam Saigol resigns over ‘personal reasons’

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) Chairman Azam Saigol has resigned from his post over what PIA spokesperson described as “personal reasons”.

Saigol, who was facing a lot of criticism after a press conference he did following the December 7 crash of a PIA jet which killed 47 people including famous religious personality Junaid Jamshed, has his resignation accepted by Prime Minister of Pakistan Mian Nawaz Sharif.

After the PK-661 crash, Saigol had claimed that there was no technical or human error leading the jet carrying 47 people to crash.

Earlier in the day, PIA clarified that Saigol was not taking any salary for his services as PIA chairman.

“Mr. Azam Saigol was holding position of Chairman of the Board of PIACL and has been, since his appointment, working on pro bono basis (without salary and perks),” said a statement from PIA spokesperson.

The role of the Chairman of PIACL is to head the Board since shift of Pakistan International Airlines Corporation to PIACL under the Companies Ordinance, 1984.
