LAHORE: With the deadline set for the resignations of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Law Minister Rana Sanaullah for their alleged role in Model Town incident, expired on Sunday, the steering committee formed at the Pakistan Awami Tehreek-led (PAT) multiparty conference is slated to meet today.
The steering committee will finalize the protest strategy to press for the resignations of the PML-N leaders.
On December 30, the multi-party conference convened by the Dr Tahirul Qadri-led PAT had set January 7 for the Punjab chief minister and law minister to resign over their alleged role in the Model Town massacre.
A day earlier, a meeting of the PAT central core committee was held under the supervision of the party chief, wherein different options, including a strategy of protest, were discussed.
The steering committee comprises leaders of the Pakistan Peoples Party, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf, Awami Muslim League, Pak Sarzameen Party, and Majlis Wahdatul Muslimeen.
The multi-party conference (MPC) had earlier strongly condemned the Model Town incident and the amendments in the Khatam-e-Nabuwat (Finality of the Prophethood) oath for electoral candidates.
“Model Town incident is the worst form of state terrorism in which PML-N leadership including Nawaz Sharif, Shahbaz Sharif and Rana Sanaullah, policemen and bureaucrats are directly involved,” said a ten-point declaration issued after the conference.
Besides demanding resignations of the chief minister and law minister, the moot appealed to the Chief Justice of Pakistan to take suo moto notice of the incident, and form an unbiased and impartial joint investigation team (JIT) to fix responsibility for the carnage.
