Parliament meets to discuss Pakistan’s role in Yemen conflict

Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf returning to the parliament after an absence of seven months.

The joint session of the Senate and National Assembly will begin at 11:00 am with a motion to be moved by Defence Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif to “discuss the security situation due to Yemen crisis”, is likely to continue for two to three days, a parliamentary source said.

The government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif summoned the parliament session after intensive consultations with the military and political leaderships.

The parliament session chaired by Speaker Ayaz Sadiq will discuss the Yemen issue and the parliamentarians of different political parties will present their stance over the issue whether to join the war in Yemen or not.

PTI lawmakers have returned to the parliament after a gap of seven months. The party’s leader Imran Khan his earlier statement over the Yemen conflict has opposed Pakistan’s involvement in the conflict.

The government has repeatedly said it has not yet committed sending troops to the conflict area but that it would confront any threat to Saudi Arabia’s territorial integrity.
