Pakistan women make international debut in rugby

Wearing thigh-long shorts and green uniform Pakistan women rugby team has made international debut this weekend with a resolve to glorify Pakistan’s name with their efforts and hard work.

Before participating in international event, the nascent team had a nerve-strenuous two-month training camp in their homeland.

Pakistan won two matches and lost four in women’s Asia Rugby Sevens Trophy 2017 in Laos.

The players say their real goal is to inspire fellow women of their country which could force them to think “if they can do it, we can do it”.

A Pakistani woman rugby player Mehru Khankistan said: “For everyone it’s a huge deal that the women are playing rugby. First that’s the big deal that women are playing rugby. And secondly that we are getting a platform to come and perform and to represent our country.”

Another player Feiza Mahmood Mirza said: “We are here because we are making change. We are the ones who are going to be the inspiration for other girls.”

A Pakistan Rugby Union statement said the union was striving hard for the cause of rugby (an unpopular game) in Pakistan.

Pakistan featured in the event alongside with South Korea, India, Philippines, Malaysia, Laos and Nepal.

The rugby game is a type of football which originated in a town of Warwickshire county, Rugby, in England. This is not a popular sport in Pakistan.

The call of referee “crouch, bind, set” begins the rugby game. The forwards of each team crouch side by side with arms locked with the opponents. Play starts with the ball thrown in between them and the two sides compete for possession.
