There is no honour in ‘honour killing’: PM at screening of Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy’s documentary

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif spoke after the screening of Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s A girl in the river: The price of forgiveness which has been nominated for the 88th Academy Awards. Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy, who is the sole Oscar-winning filmmaker from Pakistan has been elated ever since her movie was nominated for the Academy Award.

Speaking at the occasion, the premier said the total number of women

A girl in the river: The price of forgiveness focuses on an eighteen year-old female who survived an honour killing attack on her life. Chinoy has already won an Academy Award in 2012 for her previous film Saving Face, which centered around the topic of acid attacks on Pakistani women.

PM Nawaz also said that the government was not oblivious to the problems and issuse that were highlighted in the documentary. He said the government of the day was very much active in finding a solution to these problems.

“Islam has placed emphasis and importance on the rights of women. There is no honour in ‘honour killing’, he said.

He also said women were the pride of Pakistan’s society and that the government wanted to empower women on every level and forum.

Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy also spoke on the occasion and said that Islam had provided women with many rights. Killings in the name of honour should be put to an end, she said.
