NA panel again summons NAB chief on May 22

ISLAMABAD: A parliamentary panel on Wednesday excused National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Chairman retired Justice Javed Iqbal from his scheduled appearance before it after he said he couldn’t turn up owing to prior commitments, ARY News reported.

The National Assembly Standing Committee on Law and Justice had summoned the NAB chief today to give an explanation for ordering an inquiry against former premier Nawaz Sharif for allegedly laundering billions of dollars to India.

Sources said he couldn’t appear before the Committee because of his prior commitments and asked the parliamentary body to reschedule his appearance, allowing significant time so that he could turn up to testify before it.

The parliamentary panel headed by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) MNA Chaudhry Mohammad Ashraf has summoned the NAB chief again on May 22.

NAB launched the probe against Mr. Sharif after the World Bank’s migration and remittance book released in September 2016 carried information that foreign exchange reserves of India increased by $4.9 billion after receiving the amount from Pakistan.

Earlier, criticising the anti-graft Bureau for money-laundering probe against Nawaz, Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi had asked the National Assembly to constitute a committee, summon NAB chairman and investigate Mr. Sharif’s alleged involvement in sending $4.9 billion to India.
