ISLAMABAD: In a bid to prevent people from mosquito-borne disease, malaria, the federal government has decided to distribute 3.4 million insecticide-treated mosquito nets, worth Rs1.75bn, among the people in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, said sources.
The insecticide-treated mosquito nets would be distributed during a door-to-door campaign against malaria, a life-threatening disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes in KP and Balochistan.
The sources further said that the mosquito nets would be distributed in 10 particular districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and 11 districts of Balochistan province.
Health ministry sources that the mosquito nets would be distributed in June under the United Nations’ malaria control programme.
National Aids Control Programme (NACP) Manager Dr Baseer Achakzai said, “The insecticide-treated mosquito nets are provided by The Global Fund.” He said that Rs200mn to be spent on its distribution.

Earlier, in recognition for meeting international target on prevention of malaria, Pakistan had won the Alliance for Malaria Prevention (AMP) Award 2018 on February 27.
The AMP had held its annual partners’ conference on January 28 and 29. The conference was ALSO attended by a two-member delegation from Pakistan. It was hosted by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in Geneva, Switzerland.
