ISLAMABAD: Maulana Sami ul Haq on Monday excused himself from playing the role of a mediator between the Afghanistan government and Afghan Taliban, ARY News reported.

A high-level delegation of the Afghan government called on the chief of the eponymous faction of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) at Akora Khattak seeking assistance in paving way and arranging peace talks with the Afghan Taliban.

“We regard you as our leader and will acknowledge your any decision in this regard. Kindly, guide us for establishment of peace in Afghanistan,” the Afghan delegation requested him.

They said Maulana Sami was their mentor just like the Afghan Taliban.

The JUI-S leader said it was an issue of global politics and the world powers did not want it to be resolved.

“I cannot burden (my) weak shoulders with such a big responsibility, however, I pray for freedom of Afghanistan and rule of Islam,” he said.

Earlier in January last year, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani sought help from Maulana Sami-ul-Haq to arrange talks with the Afghan Taliban.

The Afghan president commended the services of Sami-ul-Haq and the Dar-ul-Uloom Haqqania institute. He said that Maulana Sami-ul-Haq was not just a revered figure for the Afghan Taliban but the entire Afghan nation, and he himself viewed Haq as a mentor.

Maulana Sami-ul-Haq appreciated his remarks and said that it was their mutual responsibility to ensure peace in Afghanistan and Pakistan. However, it was the foremost responsibility of the Afghan government to play a role for peace and security in their country, he had said.
