The new Labour MP, Rosena Allin-Khan, is a Tooting-born and works as an A&E doctor at the local St George’s Hospital.

She successfully bagged 17,894 votes, winning with a big majority of 6,357. On the other hand, Conservative’s Dan Watkins, who had come second to Mr Khan at the 2015 election, got only 11,537 votes, said the British media reports.

Soon after winning the Tooting seat, Dr Allin-Khan paid tribute to the slain Labour MP Jo Cox in a sombre evening, who was killed on Thursday in West Yorkshire.

There were no celebrations at the Wandsworth Town Hall when the result of the Tooting by-election was announced. While earlier, a two-minute silence was also observed as a tribute for Mrs Cox.

Sending her thoughts and prayers to Mrs Cox’s husband and family, Dr Allin-Khan said due to the “horrific events of yesterday and the shocking death of Jo Cox” she would not make any winning speech.

“She was a proud and passionate campaigner who will be desperately missed,” Dr Allin-Khan said.

Dr Allin-Khan was selected by the UK Labour party to fight for the Tooting seat after Sadiq Khan stepped down as an MP.
