Kartarpur opening demonstrates Pakistan’s commitment to peace: Russian envoy

KARACHI: Alexey Y Dedov, the ambassador of the Russian Federation in Pakistan, hailed the move of the South Asain giant to open the Kartarpur Corridor for Sikh pilgrims in India.

According to details, the envoy, speaking at Pakistan Institute of International Affairs on the topic of “Russia’s Stabilising Role in South Asia”, stated that Pakistan’s decision of opening Kartarpur border shows the country’s commitment towards peace and stability in the region.

He further appreciated Pakistan’s military crackdown against militants present inside its border under the operations of Radd-ul-Fasaad and Zarb-e-Azb.

Expressing a desire to further cement bilateral ties between Islamabad and Moscow, the Russian ambassador said, Peace Mission 2018 is a testament to strong relations between the two countries.

Responding to a question related to Afghanistan, Dedov said that Russia favors a democratic Afghanistan, but few Afghan territories are still being used for terrorism.

The diplomat told the participants at the insttitue that Russia is also a part of One Belt One Road cooperation, and aspires to establish strengthened trilateral trade with Pakistan and China under the mega project.

Pakistan and Russia have also stepped up cooperation in the defence sector since 2014 when the two countries signed an agreement for boosting bilateral ties.
