KARACHI: A cargo passage worth almost $8-10 billion is under planning to be constructed along with the sea front from Karachi Port to Port Qasim for swift cargo progress, including cargoes carrying fluids and all kinds of shipments.
Rear Admiral Jamil Akhter, the chairman of Karachi Port Trust along with federal minister for Maritime Affairs and Foreign Affairs Abdullah Hussain Haroon in Karachi Port Trust (KPT) provided these details to media on Friday. Furthermore, the minister evaluated the progressive reports of the developing ventures.
According to his statement, KPT has already handled cargo of more than 54 million tons, and it is projected that in the upcoming years KPT will handle record breaking shipments due to latest operational systems of South Asia Pakistan Terminals.
According to details, the freight corridor will include a railway track and road in addition to the LNG and POL pipelines. Foreigners, such as Chinese and Western corporations have shown their concern related to this project.
KPT is also planning to start an expressway from Kemari to Northern Bypass, in order to provide a hurdle free and proper entrance road system to port passage.
KPT is also trying to connect to Pakistan Railways (PR) in order to augment the containers movement from Karachi port to other cities, till the time these projects are under completion.
KPT Chairman advised the minister about the infrastructure and system of KPT, the ventures, developments including an upcoming venture of Shuttle Freight Train from KPT to Dhabe ji Chemical and Edible Oil Terminal, Cargo Village & Industrial Park etc.
The totality of cargo handled at Karachi port during the past 24 hours are about 124,209 tons, out of which 41,675 tons were of export cargo and 82,534 tons includes import shipments.
