LAHORE: A Joint Investigation Team (JIT) has been constituted to probe two separate attacks at the house of Justice Ijazul Ahsan in Lahore’s Model Town.
Additional IG Muhammad Tahir will head the probe, which includes DIG Investigation Sultan Chaudhry and representatives of Military Intelligence (MI), Inter Services Intelligence (ISI), and Intelligence Bureau (IB) as its members, according to Punjab government spokesman Malik Ahmad Khan.
He said officers of the Special Branch and Forensic Agency will also be part of the JIT.
Meanwhile, police have registered an FIR against unknown assailants for firing shots at the residence of Supreme Court judge Justice Ijazul Ahsan in Lahore.
On Sunday, gunshots were fired at the house of Justice Ahsan twice within the span of a few hours. Two separate incidents of firing took place late Saturday night and Sunday morning. No one was reported injured in the attacks.
As the news of the firing made headlines, Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar while taking cognizance of the incident reached the residence of the apex court judge. He directed Inspector General of Punjab Police Captain (retd) Arif Nawaz to thoroughly investigate the incident.
The chief justice is monitoring the situation himself, said a statement issued by the apex court shortly after the attacks.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif also took notice of the incident and directed the police to ensure immediate arrest of the attackers.
In a statement, the premier directed the law enforcement agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice as soon as possible.
It merits mention here that Justice Ahsan had been appointed as monitoring judge to supervise the trial proceedings in the accountability court of Islamabad against former premier Nawaz Sharif, and members of his family.
On July 28 last year, a five-judge bench of the apex court unanimously disqualified Sharif and directed the NAB to file references against him, his sons – Hassan and Hussain Nawaz – daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Captain (retd) Muhammad Safdar and Ishaq Dar.
The judge was also part of the five-member bench that heard and decided the Panama Papers case, which resulted in the disqualification of the PML-N supreme leader.
