NEW DELHI: Dubbed the ‘mother of all clashes’ in the cricket, the date for much-anticipated encounter between Pakistan and India in the World Cup 2019 has been confirmed and it’s 16th June (Sunday). The match will be played at the Old Trafford.
The 2019 World Cup will be held in England and Wales from May 30 to July 14.
According to reports, the World Cup 2019 will be in round-robin format where every team which play each other. India will open their campaign against South Africa on June 5. However, the dates of the match circulating in media reports need to be ratified by the ICC board.
In a bid to maintain the Lodha Committee recommendation, which says a mandatory 15-day gap is required between the Indian Premier League (IPL) final and any international match, the South Africa game was postponed by three days from June 2 to June 5.
India won the World Cup in 2011 after 28 years.
Interestingly, ICC, in their various marquee events, have started with an Indo-Pak fixture in the past which is almost always a sell-out. It happened in the 2015 World Cup in Australia (at Adelaide) and the 2017 Champions Trophy in UK (in Birmingham).
“This is the first time an Indo-Pak match won’t be a starting affair. Since the format will be a round robin affair (all teams playing each other like 1992),” a senior BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
Among other things, ICC will deliberate on the process for the election of its chairman. The election, if required, will be held at the June-end annual conference and the ICC Board will finalise the process for it. Giles Clarke of England, who has been instrumental in organising World XI matches in Pakistan is an aspirant but incumbent Shashank Manohar is likely to be offered extension, reports the IndianExpress.
