In a historic turn of events, Krishna Kohli, once considered “untouchable” becomes Pakistan’s Senator

Thar: A woman from the bottom of the Hindu caste hierarchy has been elected to the Senate for the first time in Pakistan. Hailing from Dhana Gam in Nagarparkar, Tharparkar, 39 years old Krishna was held for three years as bonded labor along with her family by a landlord in Umerkot. They were later set free in a police raid.

Krishna started her primary education from Umerkot district and then continued her education in Mirpurkhas. She was married at the age of 16 and continued her studies to get a MA degree in sociology from the University of Sindh.

She started taking part in social activities in 2005 by organizing different seminars in Tharpa­rkar. While speaking to ARY News she said, “I worked with Raza Rabbani Khar on the 18th amendment, initiated campaigns. Then I worked on the Anti-Sexual Harassment Bill passed in 2010 by Mr. Zardari. Then I run a Legal Aid Centre. Now it has been two years that I working on civic education in Tharparkar. I got a call by President Shah and he said that if you are willing you can submit your CV in this. I got excited. I didn’t want to lose the opportunity.”

Speaking about the future, Krishna says “My basic aim is that in Tharparkar I focus on health, education; even water is a big issue and the implementation of laws which are already present for women.”
