ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Thursday lamented the arrest warrants issued against him in the contempt case.

Talking to media persons outside the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) building, he said that his party has been making all-out efforts to strengthen the state institutions.

“I never intend to degrade any institution, making them stronger instead,” he asserted, adding that his criticism was misconceived.

The sole purpose of the criticism was to make the ECP more credible and stronger, Khan insisted, adding that he did not intend to defame any representative of a state institution.

Applauding the ECP’s ruling, the PTI chief said that the remarks were made for free and fare elections in the country, adding that his party held 126-day sit-in for the cause.

Moreover, he opined that the country’s top electoral body consultation meetings should not be restricted between the government and opposition.

Earlier today, the ECP concluded the contempt proceedings against Imran Khan after he submitted an unconditional apology to the election body over his remarks.

Khan’s counsel Babar Awan presented arguments before the bench and argued that his client believed in the supremacy of the law and had immense respect for the ECP.

Later, the five-member ECP bench summoned a written apology from PTI chief Imran Khan.

Khan submitted a written apology, after a brief consultation with legal, over his insulting remarks against the country’s top electoral body.

Following the submission of two written apologies, the bench ruled that it accepted Khan’s apology.
