Happy Birthday to the man behind The Nobel Prizes

The famous scientist, businessman, inventor, engineer and founder of Nobel Prizes Alfred Bernhard Nobel was born today on 21st October 1833 in Sweden. He was the inventor of dynamite and benefactor of science. His love for his work and fields is reflected in the prizes he established. The synthetic element nobelium is also named after him.

When Alfred died in 1896, in his last will and testament he suggested to give much of his fortune to those who

have done their best in the field of peace, chemistry, physics, physiology, medicine, literature and humanity. After enough  opposition from his relatives and different authorities his will was executed in 1901. The first Nobel prizes were awarded in Stockholm, Sweden and the peace prize was given in Kristiania (now Oslo), Norway.

Pakistan’s Malala Yusufzai, Physicist Abdus Salam, Bangladesh’s Muhammad Yunus and India’s Mother Teresa are few Asians who have won this prize in their respective fields.
