LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif visited Ittifaq Hospital here on Tuesday morning to inquire about the health of those injured in a suicide bomb blast near the Arfa Kareem Tower on Ferozpur Road, ARY News reported.
At least 28 people were killed and over 50 others wounded when a suicide bomber hit policemen and people gathered during an anti-encroachment operation in the Kot Lakhpat Fruit Market late Monday afternoon.
The chief minister inquired after the health of the victims of the blast and issued directives to the hospital administration to provide best possible care to them.
Speaking to media on the occasion, Sharif said this was a ghastly incident of terrorism, adding that the nation will avenge the killing of innocent people in the blast.
The chief minister said that those behind such horrible act of terrorism will meet their dreadful end. “Blood spilled in terrorism will bear results and the sacrifices of those who laid their lives in war on terror will not go waste.”
Funeral Prayers
Meanwhile, the funeral prayers of the nine policemen, martyred in the suicide bomb blast were offered at the Qila Gujjar Singh police lines.
CM Shahbaz Sharif, Corps Commander Lt Gen Sadiq Ali, Provincial Law Minister Rana Sanaullah Khan, Chief Secretary Capt (R) Zahid Saeed were among those who attended the funeral prayers.
Afterwards, the bodies of the martyred policemen were transported to their native places for burial.
According to the initial investigation carried out by the forensic team and Bomb Disposal Squad, the blast was a suicide attack. The attacker used four to five kilograms of explosive material, prima cord and ball bearings to inflict as much as possible damage, they added.
They said further investigation into the blast was underway as the remains of the suicide attacker were also sent for forensic examination.
Meanwhile, an FIR of the incident was registered on the complaint of CTD Inspector Abid Baig under Section 109, 02, 324, 148, 149 of CrPC and 4/5 of the Explosive Substances Act.
