KARACHI: Flour mills association has warned that the prices of flour could reach Rs200 per kilogram and demanded of the government to allow wheat import to avoid the situation, ARY NEWS reported.
The mills have hiked the prices in wholesale market where the prices have soared to Rs90 per kilogram after a hike of Rs10 per kilogram.
“Heavy monsoon and floods in Sindh have suspended wheat supply from the interior parts of the province,” the association said while sharing the reason. The retail price of fine and ‘chakki’ flour have reached Rs120 per kilogram and Rs125 per kilogram.
The price of super fine flour has reached Rs115 per kilogram after a Rs10 per kilogram hike. “If the government fails to import the wheat, the price of the commodity could soar to Rs200 per kilogram,” the association said.
Flour crisis has already worsened in Balochistan, adding to the people’s woes who are reeling from the devastation wrought by heavy rains and subsequent flash floods.
On Thursday, the prices of the commodity skyrocketed in Quetta and other parts of Balochistan. The flour was being sold at Rs130 to Rs135 per kilogramme.
A 20-kilo bag is being sold at Rs2,700 which was previously available at Rs1,600 in the province. Meanwhile, 50-kilo bag was available at Rs6,300.
Flour was not available in most shops and utility stores located in Quetta and other parts of the province.
