FORTALEZA: Costa Rica defeated former champions Uruguay 3-1 in their FIFA World Cup match, ARY News reports on Sunday.
Both sides got a chance to score in the early moments of the match but failed to capitalize on their opportunities although Uruguay was looking strong.
Diego Godin’s goal for Uruguay was rejected by the referee due to an offside.
Uruguay’s Edinson Cavani scored the first goal of the match for the team with a penalty kick in the 23rd minute.
The former champions continued to attack Costa Rica’s goal as Diego Forlan’s shot just missed the target. The attacker missed again as keeper saved the deflection going into the six yard box on the brink of half time.
Five minutes after half time, Oscar Duarte nearly equalized for Costa Rica but Joes Cambell scored four minutes later via superb volley to make it 1-1.
Duarte took the lead for his side in the 57th minute by a header.
Costa Rica started to attack the Uruguay half with classy runs whereas Cambell shot just went above the goal post denying the third one by just margins in the 64th minute.
It was a shocker that Uruguay did not let Luis Suarez play in the match.
The former champions were desperate to equalize the scoreline but missed their chances. Cavani’s cross was wasted and then his header was saved by Costa Rican keeper.
Costa Rica sealed the game when Marco Ureña netted the third goal for his side in the 84th minute.
