Dr Farooq Sattar, born 9 April 1959, is the former convener of the MuttahidaQaumi Movement (MQM) and has also been its parliamentary leader.
His association with MQM goes back a long way to the All Pakistan Muhajir Students Organisation (APMSO) formed in 1978, and Sattar became a member as early as 1979. The APMSO formed by Altaf Hussain and Azeem Ahmed Tariq served as the precursor to MQM.
After graduating from Sindh Medical College in 1986, he remained actively involved with MQM and has not looked back since. At the age of 28 in 1987, he was elected the mayor of Karachi
Sattar has consistently been part of either the National Assembly or the Sindh Assembly since 1988.
In 1993, MQM boycotted the National Assembly polls with Sattar returning to a provincial assembly seat instead, and was appointed leader of the opposition in the Sindh Assembly. In 1997, Sattar gave up his National Assembly for a provincial seat — he was then appointed minister for local government.
In 2002, Sattar won a by-election on the NA-255 seat, which had been previously won by a candidate of MQM’s arch-nemesis MohajirQaumi Movement (MQM-Haqiqi). Hewon the 2008 and 2013 election from NA-249 Karachi.
The MQM heavyweight has also been the chairman of the National Assembly’s foreign affairs committee and held the post of federal minister for overseas Pakistanis from 2008-2013. He also remained Deputy Convener of the MQM’s central coordination committee.
Things radically changed on August 22, 2016 when MQM chiefAltaf Hussain gave speech raising anti-state slogans and instigated party workers to attack media organisations. Ultimately Sattar was taken into custody by Sindh Rangers but was released a few hours later.
Sattar was charged for listening to, organising, and facilitating a speech by Altaf Hussain against the military and security agencies of Pakistan, while Anti-Terrorism Court issued a non-bailable arrest warrants for him in a hate speech case.
Later, Sattar disassociated with the London-based leadership and changed the constitution of MQM, formed a new faction MQM-Pakistan, and appointed himself as the convener of the coordination committee of MQM-P.
In November 2017, Sattar announced MQM-P would make a political alliance with Pak Sarzameen Party (PSP) founded by Mustafa Kamal, but faced stiff resistance from which the party. A day later, he announced his resignation from the party and politics, butlater retracted his resignation.
The party faced further international rift during the Senate elections over the nomination of Kamran Tessori. MQM faced a drubbing in the polls and won just one seat. The party split further with one faction led by Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui.
