PM announces state funeral for Dr Ruth Pfau

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Thursday announced state funeral for Dr Ruth Pfau in recognition of the services rendered by her for Pakistan.

The leprosy doctor passed away at the age of 88 here today morning. The German nun lost her battle with life while she was undergoing a surgery at the Marie Adelaide Leprosy Centre.

The prime minister has announced state funeral for Ruth Pfau, confirmed a statement released by the PM’s House.

The entire nation is indebted to Ruth Pfao for her selfeless and unmatched services for eradication of leprosy, read the statement.

“She gave new hope to innumerable people and proved through her illustrious toil that serving humanity knows no boundaries. We are proud of her exemplary services and she will remain in our hearts as a shining symbol in times ahead,” it added.

Earlier today, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah wrote to the federal government seeking permission for state funeral for Pfau.

Murad expressed sorrow over demise of Ruth Pfau, who devoted 50 years of tireless struggle fighting the stigmatized disease of leprosy in Pakistan. She led the country to be declared by the World Health Organization as first Asian country to have controlled leprosy in 1996.

Dr Pfau was recognized globally for her services and received numerous degrees and awards. The government of Pakistan bestowed her with Sitara-e-Pakistan, Hilal-e-Pakistan and Hilal-e-Imtiaz for her invaluable contributions.
