ISLAMABAD: Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) only managed to win a single seat in Senate polls from Sindh despite a last-minute reconciliation between the party’s rival factions led by Farooq Sattar and Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, ARY News reported.
According to unofficial results, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) won 10 out of 12 vacant seats from Sindh while Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F) candidate Muzaffar Shah and MQM-P’s Farogh Nasim won the two other seats.
Just yesterday, the two factions of the MQM-P buried the hatchet and announced their joint candidates and were aspiring to win four seats in the upper house.
Dr Farooq Sattar of PIB-faction and Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui of the Bahadurabad-group announced the names of their five candidates.
“We have decided with consensus to nominate two candidates on general seats, Barrister Farogh Naseem and Kamran Khan Tessori. While Dr Abdul Qadir Khanzada will be nominated on the seat of technocrat, Dr Nighat Shakeel on the seats reserved for women and Sanjay Perwani on the seats reserved for minorities,” Farooq Sattar had said.
Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, however, clarified that Kamran Tessori is not his faction’s candidate and only Farogh Nasim has his backing for the general seat.
Rival MQM-P factions unite on Senate election candidates
Difference emerged between Farooq Sattar and his fellow party men upon the nomination of Kamran Tessori as party’s candidate for Senate polls which led to division as party’s Bahadurabad faction led by Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui removed Sattar as party’s convener while Sattar dissolved the Rabita Committee and announced fresh elections.
