KARACHI: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has summoned Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) MPA Taimur Talpur after he confessed to horse trading in the Senate elections.
The ECP has taken notice of the recent statement of the PPP leader in the Sindh Assembly and instructed him to appear before the commission on October 4.
A ruckus was created in the Sindh Assembly on Thursday as the government and opposition clashed with each other during discussion on the fourth day of the post budget session.
Talpur, who is the son of Nawab Yousaf Talpur, lashed out at Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) member Nusrat Sehar Abbasi for criticising the PPP’s policies, creating a huge uproar in the assembly.
“They are talking about corruption, loyalty and governance. We know about your credibility,” he said before making the rather startling revelation that a opposition sold their vote to the PPP,
“I personally know one of your opposition members who sold his vote in the last Senate election. He is still sitting on the opposition benches,” claimed the PPP leader.
The opposition was stunned after the revelation and Abbasi exclaimed that the PPP MPA has himself admitted to horse trading in the assembly.
However, Talpur then continued to lash out at Abbasi. “Stop playing the devil’s game. You will get the reserved seat for women again,” he quipped, causing complete chaos and mayhem in the House.
Talpur, continued his speech and pointing a finger at Abbasi saying: “She is crying now, but I want to disclose here that it is the PPP that has given a government job to her husband.”
The opposition particularly the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and GDA lawmakers strongly objected and walked out of the session chaired by Deputy Speaker Rehana Leghari.
Speaking to the media outside the assembly, the opposition leaders said that they would present a clip of Talpur’s speech to the ECP as he had confessed about the PPP buying votes in the Senate elections.
They urged the Chief Justice of Pakistan to take action and order an enquiry to probe the matter.
Ms Abbasi said that Taimur Talpur has admitted on the floor of the assembly how he and his party have indulged in horse-trading and there must be action against him.
She also denied the statement about her husband’s job in the Sindh government saying that they would never seek any incentive from the PPP government.
PTI MPA Haleem Adil Sheikh that an elected parliamentarian had confessed to vote buying and the matter should be problem. He said that a letter had been written to the Speaker Sindh Assembly.
