Access to quality, affordable medicines a top priority: Zafar Mirza

ISLAMABAD: Addressing the participants of a Health & Population Think Tank meeting today (Monday) Health Minister Dr. Zafar Mirza stated that access to medicines was the top priority of the government, ARY News reported.

The conference was organized by Health Services Academy Islamabad to overlook and deliberate upon the healthcare sector of Pakistan with the theme ‘Access to Medicines’ and chaired by Dr. Zafar Mirza.

Mirza said that his Ministry was taking measures to ensure access to quality medicines at affordable prices.

He added that the government’s resolve to transform the institutional outlook of the Drug Regulatory Authority was very strong and ensured visible change within two years.

“Transparency and merit-based decisions are our top priority and there will be no compromise on it, stressed Mirza.

Poor population in developing countries are struggling to access medicines and impediments in their way have yet to be fully removed, revealed Mirza.

Representatives of provincial governments, federal agencies and ministries, international organizations and donors, industry and civil society were in attendance.

Experts and participants discussed different aspects of access to medicine strategies including pricing regulations, intellectual property & international trade and medicines procurement along with supply chain issues.
