Dr. Usman’s real name was Muhammad Aqeel. He was a former soldier of Pakistan Army’s medical corps, belonging to Tehsil Kahota of Rawalpindi.
Trained by sectarian organizations of Punjab, he was accused of planning the 2009 attack on Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore and of leading the attacking group.
He was also involved in planning of assassination attempt on former president General retired Pervez Musharraf.
The GHQ attack
Sporting a suicide jacket, Aqeel planted landmines during the militant attack on Pakistan Army Headquarters in Rawalpindi.
He killed 5 Pakistan Army commandos during the attack.
He was arrested severely injured and unconscious after the attack. Tried in military court, he was awarded capital punishment.
Usman was hanged today when Pakistan government ended a moratorium on the death penalty in the wake of a Taliban school massacre that killed 149 people.
