Who better to divulge into this subject than Anupam Kher’s wife, Kirron Kher? The actress has played the role of a mother who was disgusted at her son’s homosexuality, in 2011’s critically acclaimed film Dostana.
Kirron stated that homosexuality was everyone’s private matter and should not be made a target of abuses, mockery and ridicule. She also stated that she was also friends with many homosexuals.
“One’s prayer and pleasure are personal business. I’ve a mixed bag of friends who are homosexuals, heterosexuals and bisexuals. Their sexual orientation does not define our friendship.”
Kirron was of the opinion that homosexuality stemmed from medical and scientific reasons. She also believed that men do not have the choice or preference of being straight, at times. Speaking to Mumbai Mirror, she also shed light as to how her political party reacted to her cause of speaking up for homosexuals. “There are many in power who are against Section 377 but there are also those who support it. The
first thing I would like to do is introduce educational programs which will help people understand the scientific and medical history of homosexuality. This will eradicate the stereotype that men have a choice in deciding their sexual preferences.”Kirron was also of the view that films in the past have helped to create a positive image of a community. She cited the example of films such as Bhaag Milka Bhaag, Singh is King and The Legend of Bhagat Singh, as revamping Sikh’s image in a very positive way. Wrapping up the topic, this is what Kirron said regarding India’s acclaimed film industry.
Bollywood is filled with closeted gays who pretend to be straight. It will take a long time for people to be open about the issue. The change definitely needs to start with our film industry.”
Whilst Kiran seems to have spoken the truth, it would have been certainly more beneficial had the actress named a few actors who were afraid to come out!
