Bollywood is one of the biggest film industries in the world and has earned felicitations from the likes of Hollywood celebrities such as Kevin Spacey, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Kylie Minogue. However, recently Wikipedia put together a list of ‘World’s Worst Ever Movies’ and three Bollywood movies made the list!
The Wikipedia list has been compiled by a couple of respected film critics and feature movies from around the world. The three Bollywood films which were included in the list were Aag, Machhli Jal Ki Rani Hai and Humshakals.
Aag, which was released in 2007, was directed by Ram Gopal Varma and was initially titled Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag. Verma had attempted to remake blockbuster “Sholay”, but he ended up failing miserably. The movie featured Amitabh Bachchan, Mohanlal, Ajay Devgn, Prashant Raj Sachdev and Sushmita Sen. Despite having an ensemble cast, the movie failed to gross big and according to Wikipedia, were only able to collect a total of Rs 11 crore worldwide at the box office.
Machhli Jal Ki Rani Hai was a 2004 Bollywood film directed by Debaloy Dey. The film featured Bhanu Uday, Swara Bhaskar, Murli Sharma and Reema Debnath. It met with a truly horrific fate at the box office and was able to gross a scanty sum of Rs 1.35 crore at the box office, according to Bollywood Hungama.
Humshakals was another movie included in the category and was a surprise flop. This film, too, featured an ensemble cast including Saif Ali Khan, Riteish Deshmukh, Ram Kapoor, Bipasha Basu, Tamannaah Bhatia and Esha Gupta. Directed by Sajid Khan, the movie failed to garner enough collections at the box office and seemed to only collect Rs 60 crores, which was not even half of its collections.
Bollywood is indeed a renowned film industry that has done well and continues to do well. However, lists such as these are a constant reminder that Bollywood can (and does) come up with some of the worst flicks of all time.
