According to details, Sindh Assembly on Monday accepted the Sindh Information of Temporary Residents Bill 2015 through majority of votes.

The new law allows keeping the owner under custody for as long as six months, if he fails to provide the information of any tenant or guest checking in a hotel to police within three hours.

The new law also permits to subject the violators to a fine up to Rs 45 thousand.

Provincial Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Dr Sikander Maindhro said that the bill comes as part of the National Action Plan against terrorists and criminals in the country.

MQM’s Syed Sardar Ahmed suggested that the time-frame to inform police should be extended to 24 hours; three hours make quite a limited span for this purpose.

He said that with such unlimited powers delegated to police, the province is feared to become a ‘police state’.

Muttahida Qaumi Movement and Pakistan Muslim League-Functional recommended several amendments in the bill, yet those were turned down.
