AR Rahman replies back to fatwa, says he did not direct or produce the film

AR Rahman seems to be in trouble these days for his involvement in an Irani film, based on the life of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The movie is part of a trilogy and the first part is titled Muhammad: Messenger of God. AR Rahman composed the music of the film, for which a fatwa was launched against him by a Mumbai-based Muslim clergy and Raza Academy.

A couple of days after the fatwa was issued against him, the Oscar-winning singer cancelled a concert in New Delhi at the last minute. Organizers were sure that it was in reaction to the fatwa.

Here are a few excerpts from the message that was posted from AR Rahman’s official Facebook account:-

“I didn’t direct or produce the film I

just did the music. My spiritual experiences of working on the film are very personal and I would prefer not to share these. My decision to compose the music for the film was made in good faith and with no intention of causing offence.”

Rahman also said that he had participated in the movie to give something back in exchange for the wealth and fame that God had given him so much in his lifetime.

AR Rahman said that the message of the movie was nothing but positive.

“A film whose conception was to unite humanity, clear misconceptions and spread my message,” he said.

AR Rahman has finally come forward with his explanation. Will the situation die down or further escalate? The fatwa has caused disturbance to Rahman, it is obvious from his reply. It would be interesting to know what follows through.
