Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan has asked his country fellows to sing his father Dr Harivansh Rai Bachchan’s poem instead of ‘Happy Birthday To You’ on a birthday celebration.

Big Bachchan, who is quite active on social media and often shares words of wisdom with his followers, has been trolled for this out of the blue request along criticising western style of birthday celebration.

His tweet has caught many eyeballs, wherein he not only asked for reciting his father’s poem on birthdays but also questioned the “westernised” birthday celebrations in India.

“Why cake? Why candle?” Calling the cake-cutting and candle-blowing celebrations “westernised”, the Piku star wrote, “The English left the practice with us and we have become slaves to it.”

Highlighting the contrast between desi celebrations and the westernised ones, he said, “Why to blow out candles when in our culture we light a lamp on birthday?” He urged everyone to sing, “Varsh nav, harsh nav!”

Amit G’s father’s poem reads: “Nav Varsh, Harsh Nav, Jeevan Utkarsh Nav * Nav Umang, Nav Tarang, Jeevan Ka Nav Prasang *Naval Chaah, Naval Raah, Jeevan Ka Nav Pravaah”

(May the new year brings in new joys, hopes and promises; new yearnings, wishes and desires, a new zest to live on, to begin new journeys, new chapters, with a new enthusiasm!)

No sooner did Amitabh tweet this, people resorted to point out his “hypocrisy” with many pictures of him cutting a cake.
