In an interview with a British Magazine, Daniel Radcliffe talked about distancing himself from the ‘Harry Potter‘ franchise by starring on Broadway and in indies like ‘Kill Your Darlings’ and the upcoming romantic comedy ‘What If.’

But the bigger goal, Radcliffe says, is for him to eventually end up in the director’s chair.

‘I would love to direct,’ Radcliffe says. ‘I do it in my head when I’m watching other directors direct. ‘No, don’t say that to them!’ I think I’m quite good with people. Part of being a director is knowing how different actors work in different ways. I’d enjoy it.’

Radcliffe, 25, has observed some of the best directors in the industry, since the ‘Harry Potter’ films were helmed by Alfonso Cuaron, Mike Newell, David Yates and Chris Columbus.

‘The mistake I see even the really good directors make is they assume they are the only creative person on that set,’ Radcliffe says. ‘And actually, make-up artists are not just girls with brushes who put foundation on, and costume guys are not just there to stitch up accidents. They are all immensely creative people.’

Radcliffe probably won’t make his directorial debut for a few more years, and he anticipates his first film will be small in scale. Some of his favorite movies include classics such as ‘Dr. Strangelove,’ ‘12 Angry Men,’ ‘Arthur’ and ‘A Matter of Life and Death.’ ‘The last film to blow my mind was this film by Charlie McDowell called ‘The One I Love,’‘ Radcliffe says, referencing the Sundance drama that opens on Aug. 22. ‘When I watched that film, I was like, ‘Yes, that’s exactly the type of film I’m interested in making.’ It’s totally funny and creepy in a way that so few films manage to be.’

‘What If’ Delayed

Daniel Radcliffe’s Mexican premiere for his new film, What If, has been shut down after fears for crowd control.

The Harry Potter star, who takes the lead in the romantic comedy alongside Zoe Kazan, attended a photocall in Mexico City but the red carpet event was cancelled due to crowd control concerns, said The Hollywood Reporter. The film’s Mexican distributor Diamond Films Mexico said the city’s civil protection agency ordered it to suspend the event, which had been scheduled to take place in a shopping mall in the capital, after large throngs of fans turned up beforehand.

‘We appreciate the response and enthusiasm for this event,’ Diamond Films said. ‘Sorry, but this decision is out of our control.’ Daniel is set to attend the UK premiere of What If, directed by Michael Dowse, on August 12.
