LAHORE: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday inaugurated Clinical and Radiation Oncology department at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital (SKMCH) & Research Centre, Lahore, ARY News reported.
“It (the department) is equipped with two state-of-the-art, high energy Varian linear accelerators & a dedicated 4-D CT simulator,” PM Imran Khan tweeted.
“I am so proud that this is the best facility with latest equipment in Pakistan. Patients from Afghanistan are also coming here for treatment. This marks completion of 2nd phase of SKMCH & Research Centre. The ongoing 3rd phase work will provide surgical services by 2020, Insha Allah!” he wrote on his social media account.

The installation of two linear accelerators of identical configuration offers an important advantage in that treatment can continue uninterrupted in case of machine breakdown, since patients can be moved seamlessly from one machine to the other, read the post shared by the prime minister.
“The newly installed 4D CT smilator is the first of its kind in Pakistan. CT simulation is a procedure used while planning radiotherapy to identify the exact location and size of the area that needs treatment with radiotherapy.
“The 4-D respiratory gating system acquires CT scan images in different phases of the breathing cycle, increasing the accuracy of tumour localization and reducing the chance of either missing the tumour, or of irradiating only part of it, as a result of movement during breathing,” it added.
