Police reforms committee comprise well-known experts: CJP

ISLAMABAD: Stressing that protection of citizens is responsibility of the state, Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khosa has said the police had a prime responsibility to serve the masses, ARY News reported.

Speaking at a gathering in Islamabad, the chief justice said the recently-formed police reforms committee comprises well-known experts. He said the committee was formed in January, adding that a SP-ranked officer had been appointed to look into complaints filed against the police.

He said all kinds of complaints were being received to the officer. The CJP said the cop had given over 21,000 orders on complaints pertaining to the police department.

He said model courts were formed in each district of the country.

Justice Khosa said model courts had given verdicts in 1618 cases in 12 days. He recalled that judiciary settled over 200,000 cases in last three months.

He said the number of pending cases in Supreme Court stood at 40,000 in January, while it has been reduced to 38,000 in April.

He stated all appeals filed in criminal cases had been settled, while only 581 were left. The CJP said thousands of cases of government employees were pending in courts.

Justice Khosa informed that a special bench would be constituted to hear service cases.
