‘In reality, Pakistan not reliant on US’: Sartaj Aziz

He was briefing the Senate committees on Foreign Affairs and Defence today.

He underlined that Pakistan had always protected its integrity and will continue doing so in future. He said the concept of strategic depth had no more been working in Afghanistan.

He also mentioned that Pakistan was not in contact with the US for buying F16s anymore. Secretary Defence Masood Alam informed the committees that Pakistan will now buy F16 fighter jets from Jordan, “and US has no objection to it.”

On June 10, a US delegation led by Adviser to US president Peter Lavoy, held a meeting with Aziz in Islamabad.

Adviser to PM on Foreign Affairs expressed concern over the drone attacks in Pakistani territory.

He also discussed bilateral relations and regional situation with the US officials in the context of the US support to India’s bid for the membership of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG).

The US delegation comprised among others, US special representative for Pakistan and Afghanistan Richard Olson.

Pakistan also raised the issue of Indian interference in Pakistan. The officials also shown evidence with regard to the arrested Indian spy Kulbhushan Yadav to the US delegation.

Aziz expressed Pakistan’s reservations with regard to drone attacks in its territory. The foreign affairs advisor said that the drone attack in Balochistan has damaged the Afghanistan peace process. He also urged the US to clarify its policy with regard to the Afghan peace talks.
